Woodring Vs Kochalka

for Sage's  (@SageCoffey's) anthology- thanks for inviting me to the party, m'am! she kinda tricked me into contributing, but in a good way, like being tricked into a surprise party. im not punk, though a doodler, and a bit of a dandy. every piece of punk reference i found/liked was either a photo that'd been collaged and kinko-ized, or art by someone without much craft (re: the great Woodring Vs Kochalka letter wars in Comics Journal, 2000-ish). after staring at Tank Girl for awhile i realized i cant fake it, and decided to build the cover outta....not my art. drawing definitely occurred, but i vandalized a Norman Rockwell, collaged from the myriad talented contributors,  used other people's PS brushes, etc.....and signed my name on alla it.

P.S. this is a Rico color scheme/method. and we have a new thing soon. actually a couple new things. he prolly has a lot of new things. one of them ends in "66."

FCBD was a time! Thanks to Jackie Lewis, Terrence Hoskins, Kevin Mellon, Rico RuhRoh, and most of all Shelton Drum and the Heroes Family for making it happen. Thanks as well to everyone who came out to see us- without you we're just dorks in a tent.

Here's what happened:

Silas: Can you draw a guy with a sword killing another guy?
(and later) S: don't forget the blood.

starf*cker

anytime we can do a starfield, im very happy. here's process stuff for the cover Rico and i did for Latour/Klein/Shalvey's Winter Soldier run.
Marvels art direction was "draw Winter Soldier looking badass". Jason shared the outlines of the story, some concept art, and it became clear why he invited us to the party. visual language Rico and i had developed for Loose Ends was being imported into WS- the "neon-noir" light tracers, Pac-Man symbology, flashback grids, etc.  stuff which is fun, but really hard to plan for, the only way i know to attack it is to get a clean b+w composition with some dead-space, and then vandalize it with the light tracers. i sent Rico the b+w+spot-color image, and put all the other elements on separate layers- he's got a much stronger graphic design sense, and is quicker to simplify. i make messes.
our color roughs, mine is the boring one. Rico makes bold choices, and a lot of the time the editor is asking that they be dialed back. especially when it involves pink. sissies. so, i did a straight ahead local color version (A), and din't show it to Rico until he'd came up with his (B,C,D). luckily, our editor was sharp enough to go for Rico's take with that loud green arm- in tribute to Galaxy Rangers. bottom row is just checking the combinations.

don't know much about Winter Soldier. in my head, he's the actor who played Bucky in Captain America, but as the Comedian. if i'd seen Haywire (!!!) at the time, it woulda been Channing Tater.

bold n' spicy
Marvel let Rico place and manipulate the logo. super excited about that.

                                      a sip of water please

PTApple

Fiona Apple and P.T. Anderson
for Famous Couples week at AshCan Allstars

They were like Jay+Bey to me, but aren’t together anymore. It seemed like they leveled each other up, and their work at least went  together really well. Those are frogs and a paper bag in the background, which I’m sure makes zero sense if you’re not a fan.    Obviously I’d like to be the grinch of V Day.

Here's a video they did together way back when, featuring said paper bag.  And they made a new video too.
And the book says, "We may be through with the past, but the past ain't through with us."

Winter Ranger

did a cover for Latourette's Winter Soldier run, more here. Rico and I were both fans of the Chiarello Art Directed cartoon Galaxy Rangers, so he pumped up the color on that arm in tribute to Ranger Zack Fox. even though one of my brothers is named Zack, we still fought over who got to play Fox (i had the power arm)(yellow dishwashing glove, black marker). loser had to play Niko.

if you watch this on youtube, the Bionic Six intro is in the same queue
