Foreign Parts! Easily one of my favorite pieces of comic art of all time. Honestly I'm still blown away by the level of art and story telling in this book. And that painting is looking HOT! Got any more paintings lying around?

thanks capriotti! the lady is just a few cool/warm grey prismacolor markers, they kind of look painted just cause it got pretty messy. really havent figured them out as tools....like how you can see the pencil underneath? accident. and that spray of white at the top were supposed to be stars, but they bled alot and got too snowy. grrr. figuring out the brush pen, on her hair, and got some happy accidents. strikes and gutters ;p
appreciate that you remember foriegn parts! dove real deep into that one, set my bar to a level thats personally intimidating. hey, the fear is good, that story was the result of the terror that came from workin on a book with Jason Pearson, Rob Haynes, and Ron Marz. AHHH!!!
ill check around for paintins :)

you know what, you keep suprising me with the simple approach to your work. i can tell you kno what you're doing, and then you break it down to the simpliest forms, and render from the inspiration.

peace out

Dude, at the end of the Atlanta lecture I think I overheard you explaining the toning method used for those pages, but as much as I wanted to stick around and learn about it, I had to run out for work. Is it just grays converted into halftones in photoshop? Because really, those are some amazing looking tones, and I just cant get the hang of doing it digitally myself :\ (Therefore there obviously is no future for me in manga! Alas!)

needless to say, I love the foreign parts art and won't break it up even though I've had LOTS of requests for pages.. (mostly for the page with the girl facing the mirror.. strangely enough)
and the 'sketch' is a beaut too....

hey Cara, of course you have a future in manga, geez! and either way its all comics. aye, the dots are converted graytones. i did them hyper real airbrushy in spots, and simple in other, once the conversion happens it all holds together, so theres a lot of range. anyways, i make a layer with a base grey transparency, skewed towards either a darker (60-75%) or lighter (30-40%) range so that the values vary from page to page. if i can slightly fade it out towards the light source, thats better (this is standard oil painting technique btw, minus color, plus ease). then i erase the layer to pick out the white/bright spots. then double down where it needs to be darker. then convert to halftone. Rico, feel like chiming in on that part? its not just straight halftone filter.
Gary- thanks for checking out the blog, and holding on to the pages. knowing you appreciate em makes it easier to sleep at night. wouldn't give that story to just anyone, and i know it's part of an amazing collection: Andrew Robinson, Risso, Mignola. DAMN! it's an honor, sir.
